At left is a closeup of the wear near the headstock of my South Bend lathe, taken soon after it was moved to my basement. Clear ridges are visible where the way has been worn down. This translates into the machine not turning cylinders of uniform diameter. I decided to remedy the situation by completely rebuilding the lathe, while also learning important details about how machine tools are made and aligned.
